Feili Tang was born in Shanghai in October 1981. She studied English language & literature and German studies at the Shanghai International Studies University, where she finished her Bachelor. Afterwards, she worked as an editorial and research assistant for three English-language economic publications back in China, including the China Economic Review and Eurobiz, a monthly publicaton for the European Union Chamber of Commerce in China. In 2005, she was enrolled in a Master programme, a regional study of Great Britain, at the Humboldt University in Berlin. There, she discovered her academic interest in nation branding and national identity.

In 2006, she did an internship at VisitBritain, the former British Tourist Authority and did field work there for her Master thesis "A National Identity through Synaesthesia? The Nation Brand of Britain" which was an attempt to explore the topic of nation branding in tourism marketing.
